Botafogo debut special-edition, anti-racism kits for “Black Awareness Day”!
Last Sunday, Brazilian side Botafogo debuted their special “Black Consciousness Day” uniforms in their title-winning game against rivals Brasil de Pelotas. Designed by Kappa, the so-called “Mantle of the Denouncement of Inequality" aims to raise awareness of the racial inequalities in Brazil and the oppression of black communities in the country.
In order to highlight the importance of these social issues, Kappa managed to transform Botafogo’s kits into visual symbols of racial disparity. The shirts feature a change in the composition of the traditional Botafogo stripes, making the distribution of light and dark stripes uneven and giving the shirt a predominately white colouring as a symbol of the racial inequality and the consequences of it on the black population.
Furthermore, included on the shirts are statistics linked to the consequences of the racial discrimination in the nation. Observers can see data such as “75%”, which stands for the percentage of homicide victims who are black according to the Atlas of Violence by Ipea (Institute for Applied Economic Research).
